Installing KeyApp for DOORS

Choosing the installation folder

You must not install KeyApps for DOORS in the C:\Program Files folder. If you do, KeyApps will fail to run.

The KeyApps installation includes a license file. Whenever any change is made to license settings, KeyApps updates the license file to record this change. This means that KeyApps must have write access to the license file. You should therefore install KeyApps in a folder to which (at a minimum) KeyApps administrators have write access.

Note that, in the case of network installations, all DOORS clients must access the KeyApps installation via the same network path.

Installing KeyApps on a local machine

Once you have downloaded the software, follow the instructions below to install KeyApps for DOORS on a local machine:

Installing KeyApps on a network

Once you have downloaded the software, follow the instructions below to install KeyApps for DOORS to a network location:

Making KeyApps visible to DOORS

KeyApps for DOORS is a DOORS addin extension, and so DOORS must know where to find the KeyApps software files. Since KeyApps is installed outside of the standard DOORS installation path, the location of the KeyApps installation must be added to the DOORS ADDINS and PROJECTADDINS paths.

These paths can be specified in two different ways:

Instructions for each of these options are as follows:

To use...

Do the following...

Command-line switches

Open DOORS using a shortcut or command line in the following format:

doors -a "d:\path\addins" -J "d:\path\projectaddins"

where

  • d is the drive on which KeyApps is installed
  • path is the KeyApps installation path

Registry settings

Set the appropriate string values in the Windows registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Telelogic\DOORS\version\Config, where version is the appropriate DOORS version.

The Addins and ProjectAddins string values under this key should be set to:

  • Addins: d:\path\addins
  • ProjectAddins: d:\path\projectaddins

where

  • d is the drive on which KeyApps is installed
  • path is the KeyApps installation path

Note: direct editing of the Windows registry is potentially hazardous and should only be undertaken by experienced systems administrators.

In both cases, the ADDINS and PROJECTADDINS paths may refer only to the KeyApps installation, or they may be a semicolon-separated list of paths to both KeyApps and other DXL programs.

For more information about DOORS ADDINS and PROJECTADDINS paths, see 'The DXL Library and Addins menus' in the DXL Reference Manual or online DXL help, and 'Using the command line' in Using DOORS or online DOORS help.

Configuring KeyApps after installation

The installed KeyApps software provides a generic platform for process-centred productivity environments in DOORS. The appearance and behaviour of the KeyApps user interface is controlled by a configuration file that is specific to a given client or a given DOORS project.

Note: To access KeyApps, a given user must be authorized as a KeyApps user. See Managing KeyApps users for information on how to authorize users.

KeyApps is a collection of small tools and utilities, not all of which are relevant to a particular user or organisation. KeyApps is therefore supplied with the Manage KeyApps function to select which Apps are available and set user permission for each.

KeyApps for DOORS and Licensing

Understanding licensing

For KeyApps to run, you must have a valid license. This license defines how many users can access KeyApps and the period of validity (where appropriate). In addition, the license defines whether KeyApps may be used on many DOORS databases or whether it is restricted to run on a single DOORS database.

You can freely download and install KeyApps for DOORS on your computer for evaluation purposes. This allows you to try KeyApps without any cost or obligation before you purchase it for a period of 30 days after the installation. After the evaluation period ends, you will no longer be able to run KeyApps until you purchase and install a KeyApps license.

For more information about KeyApps licensing options contact us.

Checking your license

You can check your license in the KeyApps About dialog box. This dialog is also used to install new license keys and manage licensed users.

The About dialog gives product details, license details and copyright information. The license details section shows the installed license key, the license type and expiry date (if any), the number of licensed users and the license mode. This section also shows the license status. If the license is valid and you are an active, authorized user, the status is shown as 'Valid'. Otherwise a license error is shown.

Installing a license key

You can install a new license key by clicking on the Install Key button in the About dialog.

Note: to install a license key, you must be logged on to DOORS as a Database Manager (or a Custom user who has the power to manage the database), and you must also have write access to the KeyApps installation folder.

Enter your new license key in the Install New License dialog, then click Install. KeyApps will check and install the license key, and then update the About dialog to show the new license details.

Managing KeyApps users

Your KeyApps license defines the maximum number of uses that can access KeyApps at any one time - this is known as the licensed user quota.

To access KeyApps, a given user must be authorized as a KeyApps user. KeyApps administrators have complete control over the list of authorized users and can change its membership at any time. In addition, if you have a multi-database license, you can share the licensed user quota flexibly across multiple databases.

There are three steps to allow a given user of a given database to access KeyApps, namely:

You manage KeyApps users by clicking the Manage Users button in the About dialog.

Note: to manage KeyApps users, you must be logged on to DOORS as a Database Manager (or a Custom user who has the power to manage the database), and you must also have write access to the KeyApps installation folder.

When you first run KeyApps after installation, the program allocates a single user to the current database, adds you to the list of authorized users, and enables you as an active user. All subsequent changes to the user licensing configuration are made manually.
